LONG BEACH AND THE WPA
Events of the Past

Was your ancestor employed by the WPA? The Works Progress Administration was very active in Long Beach during the Great Depression. Our old Municipal Auditorium downtown produced WPA musicals, and many Long Beach landmarks still standing today were built by WPA workmen.

In the coming week we will be exploring Long Beach in the 1930s: Long Beach’s earthquake of 1933, schools built, roads paved, curbs laid, murals painted, and other Great Depression evidence left behind in our city. Your ancestor may have contributed to one or more of these projects, so stay tuned!
