SIDEWALK SIGNATURES
John J. Lewis

Long Beach’s sidewalks contain impressed “signatures” of many construction companies and contractors who plied their trade in the city. If your ancestor owned or worked for one of those companies, our “Sidewalk Signatures” series will be of interest to you.

John  J. Lewis was a cement contractor with an office at 233 E. Broadway and a house at 61 N. Loma Ave. in the Belmont Heights neighborhood of Long Beach. According to the 1920 U. S. Census, Mr. Lewis was from Wales, and he is mentioned in Long Beach City Directories between 1914 and 1923.

RESEARCH TIP: Looking for John J. Lewis’ office on Google Maps/Street View will show you...a parking lot! But don’t despair. The Long Beach Public Library has an extensive online collection of historic city photographs at
